The Scottish Highlands

The island on which Eilean Donan castle is built has been inhabited since at least AD618 when St Donan lived here. The castle overlooking Loch Duich was built in 1214 by the MacKenzies. Destroyed in the Jacobite rebellion it was left in ruins until it was rebuilt to the same original plan in the 1900s by the McRae family.
